Dozens Of OOU Students Crushed By Container


Dozens of undergraduates of the Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) Ago – Iwoye, have reportedly lost their lives after a container fell on a passenger bus they were traveling in.
The fatal accident, according to The Nation, occurred along the Sagamu stretch of the Lagos/Benin expressway, on Friday, June 26 when the truck marked (LAGOS) BDG 779 X, carrying the container drove against traffic and rammed into a Toyota Haiace passenger bus bearing (Lagos) XV 311 MUS, dropping the container atop of the roof of the bus, killing 12 occupants, including the driver.
The OOU students who were said to be travelling to Lagos state for the weekend died on the spot after the container pinned the bus to the ground.
Explaining the unfortunate incident that resulted in the fatal crash, Tommy Hamzat, the the Ogun state Traffic Management and Compliance Agency (TRACE) said: “I was coming from Sagamu and saw the accident, I have to hurriedly parked my car, ran there to see if the passengers could be rescued but unfortunately all the occupants were dead including the driver.”
“The bus is facing Lagos, though; I don’t know where it was coming from. The container truck with no load in it was coming from Sagamu side but was driving against the traffic and that resulted in the collision, which eventually claimed the lives of the innocent people.”
The only surviving person according to the authorities, was rushed to the the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital in Sagamu in a critical state, while the dead were taken to the morgue of the same hospital.
